Miners say Nvidia’s LHR system didn’t stop them from buying more GPUs

After getting tired of gamers complaining about the lack of stock of GPUs due to mining, Nvidia tried to reduce the hashrate of its GPUs by implementing its LHR (Low HashRate) system that reduced the performance of its GPUs in Ethereum mining and other cryptocurrencies, hoping to make their GPUs less attractive for mining. However, this did not happen, as miners continued to buy GPUs even with this LHR system, which can be easily beaten to continue making good profits.

There are several alternatives to avoid this LHR system. Miners like NBMiner or T-Rex allow you to obtain practically 80% of the original hashrate, or even allow you to mine two currencies simultaneously, such as Ethereum and Ravencoin, having good profits even if you cannot get 100% of their performance. on Ethereum.

In an interview with PCMag, miner Blake Teeter, who has about 95 GPUs mining, of which about 20 are LHR GPUs, stated that for LHR it doesn’t make sense as it didn’t achieve its purpose of preventing GPUs from being attractive to the miners. Tim Tarshis, who has among his GPUs a total of RTX 3060, which are all LHR, said that his purchase was convenient since he got them at a good price and even taking 75% of their hashrate they are profitable, confirming that the LHR system failed to do its job.

The other very attractive solution for miners is the double mining that we mentioned earlier. A miner named Sev stated that he mines two cryptocurrencies at the same time with his LHR GPUs and with market fluctuations he sometimes finds it even more profitable than mining just ETH. In his case, he bought them because there was no other option on the market other than the LHR variants, although this was not an impediment to his purchase, since it is profitable for him to use them anyway.

In this way, the Nvidia system had practically no effect on purchases by miners, who continued to buy all possible GPUs even if they had this system implemented. It will be interesting to see if Nvidia manages to create an even more powerful solution than LHR, although we really doubt it at this point.
