The miners involved in the processing of cryptocurrency networks have been invited to join the Earth Hour campaign this year, shutting down some of their equipment on March 24 from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm. The initiative to take part in the annual WWF event comes from the Russian crypto community. The organizers of the Crypto Hour hope to focus on the need for green blockchain technology.

Crypto Time

Crypto Hour will take place as part of the annual World Wildlife Fund (WWF) event known as Earth Hour. WWF’s campaign encourages people and businesses to turn off electrical appliances for one hour every year, usually in the last days of March. This year, miners from Russia and around the world have been invited by Russian experts in the mining industry and blockchain to do the same – turn off their hardware at 20:30 on March 24th.

The organizers said:

By joining the initiative, miners will demonstrate their social responsibility and commitment to caring for the planet.

The organizers hope that Crypto Hour will make people think about how to reduce the maintenance costs of the blockchain technology with which they work. By some estimates, the bitcoin network uses up to 50 terawatt hours of electricity per year, and this figure is growing. Plus, mining farms generate a lot of heat. More energy is required to cool powerful specialized equipment.

The organizers of the Crypto Hour called on the authorities to create an “environmental use map” that will show the areas where mining farms can be built near renewable energy sources. They will insist on taking measures to stimulate investment in green mining projects in the Russian Federation.

Petr Dvoryankin, one of the organizers of Crypto Hour, who is also a member of the expert council in the Duma, working on the legal framework for the Finnish sector of the country and the founder of the international network of digital assets of Cryptolife, said:

We call for the development of systems that use the heat generated by mining and the introduction of less energy-intensive technologies.

With cheap electricity and a cold climate, Russia offers good opportunities for profitable mining. The country’s energy capacity can produce 40% more electricity than the local market requires. Improving energy efficiency for both home use and companies remains a major challenge for Russia’s economic development.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour this year runs March 24 from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm local time. The event began in Australia in 2007. Now it is held annually in more than 7’000 cities around the world. It symbolizes the commitment of individuals, communities, businesses and organizations to the cleanliness of the planet and its future.

The motto of Earth Hour 2018 in Russia is “Vote for nature”. The campaign aims to raise awareness among people about the problems of nature conservation, such as the protection of natural resources, the development of alternative energy sources, the introduction of separate waste collection and recycling. Participants are encouraged to “vote” for the most important environmental initiative.

The 2018 event is expected to be the largest. According to preliminary estimates, 30 million Russians will take part in the campaign this year.
