New World Beta Performance Tests and Power Consumption Measurements for Video Cards | Video Games | Reviews

The beta version of MMORPG New World will measure the performance of video cards in 3 resolutions and the power consumption of video cards using a separate power supply.

Testing will be carried out in three resolutions: 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160. The power consumption of the graphics cards will be measured through a separate Corsair HX1000i power supply using a graphics card riser. The system, with the exception of the video card, will be powered through the Corsair CX750 power supply. At the riser for video cards, the 12V power tracks are cut off and connected via additional PCI-E 6 Pin power to the Corsair HX1000i power supply.

Performance was measured using MSI Afterburner 4.6.4 beta 2 in benchmark mode on the test section below.

Now let’s move on to testing the game at maximum settings.

At a resolution of 1920×1080, a comfortable frame rate was provided by all video cards except for the RX 480. At a resolution of 2560×1440, a comfortable frame rate was provided by all video cards, except for the RX 480 and Vega 56. At a resolution of 3840×2160, a comfortable frame rate was provided only by the 6900 XT and RTX 3080 video cards.

At 1920×1080, the processor limited the performance of the 6900 XT and RTX 3080 video cards. At 2560×1440, the 6900 XT outperforms the competitor RTX 3080 despite the performance limitations. The 6900 XT video card was found to be more processor-dependent at 1920×1080. In other resolutions, the processor did not act as a performance limiter in the game.

At a resolution of 1920×1080, all video cards provided a comfortable frame rate. At 2560×1440, all video cards except the RX 480 provided a comfortable frame rate. At 3840×2160, only GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 3060 Ti, 6900 XT and RTX 3080 video cards provided a comfortable frame rate.

The processor again limits the performance of the 6900 XT video card at 1920×1080, 2560×1440 the same situation as in the Very High settings. At 1920×1080, the processor again limits the RTX 3080, but the gain relative to the 6900 XT is reduced compared to the Very High setting.

Testing the power consumption of video cards

MMORPG New World became famous for burning EVGA GeForce 3090 video cards. Some newsmen picked up that the matter is in fans, which are trying to spin up over 200,000 rpm, but the fan cannot get more than 12 V and take more amperes, maximum rpm is limited by the voltage itself. The matter may be in the most defective fan rotation control element, errors in the BIOS, engineering miscalculation during the development of a printed circuit board.

The problem of high power consumption is most likely related to video cards other than the reference design. The table below shows the power consumption limits of video cards and the total power consumption, if indicated by the manufacturer.

For AMD video cards, the power consumption limit is specified only for the GPU, and all other peripherals on the video card are not taken into account. On Nvidia graphics cards, the power limit applies to the entire graphics card. Nvidia controls the power supply of the video card via the 12-volt power bus using a special microcircuit that controls the power supply through the motherboard slot and auxiliary power connectors.

All video cards show quite the expected result, except for the 6900 XT, which has gone beyond the 400W power consumption mark.

Let’s check the power consumption of video cards in FurMark with settings 1920×1080 AAx0.

The 6900 XT graphics card has problems with higher power consumption in the game compared to the FurMark benchmark, the difference is just over 100 watts. Users of the PowerColor Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB should use the graphics card without increasing the power consumption limit and, if necessary, reduce the voltage for the GPU.

Outcome

At low settings of 1920×1080, all video cards were able to provide a comfortable frame rate.

At maximum settings of 3080×2160, only the RTX 3080 and 6900 XT video cards showed a comfortable frame rate of 60.

In power consumption testing, only one PowerColor Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB graphics card showed an abnormally high power consumption compared to FurMark, so the likelihood of other manufacturers seeing high power consumption remains even after the patch is released.
