No coal from 2030. The new German government will accelerate the shutdown of the power plant

According to Reuters, the future German government is planning to strengthen its efforts to protect the climate. The agreement of the coalition government of Germany presented on Wednesday contains plans to accelerate the country’s departure from coal in power plants, which will not take place in 2038, but in 2030. All this with faster expansion of renewable energy sources.

The coalition consisting of the SPD and the FDP has announced that it will strive for climate neutrality and is open to all technologies, except nuclear energy, which will be abandoned by the end of 2022. According to the current plans, in 2030, not only will no coal power plant operate in Germany anymore, but also renewable energy sources will account for 80% of the domestic electricity demand.

This will be done by installing 200 gigawatt solar farms and at least 30 gigawatt offshore wind farms. In addition, Germany wants to obtain up to 10 GW of power from electrolysis on which the new hydrogen economy can be based, and from 2023 it will pay its citizens from the state budget to support renewable energy sources, instead of charging it from consumers.

Next year, the government will additionally adopt a new climate protection program and cut red tape to allow renewables to expand faster. In turn, based on forecasts of energy consumption growth, the government will ask the national regulator and grid companies to develop new plans for faster grid expansion.
