“Not the time to go out with news” – architecture Ampere has to wait

The outbreak of the coronavirus creates chaos in the world and authorities’ calls to limit physical contacts affect both work and planned meetings and events. In the technology industry, several have chosen to turn their events into completely digital variants, including Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC).

Nvidia organizes GTC every year and this is also usually a platform to go out with significant news, such as new architectures. This was also the plan for this year, but in a blog post signed by Nvidia’s CEO and founder Jensen Huang, it appears that the company is keeping all the planned news until a later time.

Exactly what Nvidia planned to show is not confirmed, but most have pointed to it being about the next graphics architecture – Ampere. This succeeds today’s Turing and will be manufactured on a new manufacturing technology, which opens up for more transistors, functions, performance and energy efficiency.

That way, our employees, partners, the media and analysts who follow us, and our customers around the world can focus on staying safe and reducing the spread of the virus.

In the blog post, Nvidia justifies the decision by saying that anyone who in one way or another planned to follow GTC digitally can now focus on preventing further spread of the virus. Part of the decision is probably also that the news risks going under the radar, as the focus for very many is elsewhere today.

Even if Nvidia chooses to postpone the news, they still plan to release “lots of good content” aimed at researchers and developers.
