Novum 3D is the world's first 100% recyclable backpack

The Vaude company presented its backpack, which belongs to the group of “Leave No Trace”, that is, in translation, one that does not leave any traces in the environment. According to the announcement, the Novum 3D is the world’s first backpack that you can recycle in full. This is true for every single component.

Novum 3D – backpack that is 100% recyclable

Let’s start with the fact that the Novum 3D backpack is only a prototype so far, but it is also an example that it is “possible” to change the theoretically irreplaceable segment in terms of its impact on the environment. It is difficult to imagine the recycling of high-end backpacks when they are built by a series of zippers, plastic buckles and a material enriched with plastic in accordance with water resistance.

The Novum 3D is different – it is 3D printed using Oechsler technology and expertise, supplemented with straps and lining made of 100% thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and does not combine with any mixed materials that would hinder recycling. In turn, those elements that could not be made of TPU (buckles) are very easily removable before recycling the backpack.

Welded seams, eliminating the need for threads, are also responsible for an eco-friendly approach, and a special design that even includes honeycomb elements for versatility. These, in turn, eliminate the need for pads with comfort in mind. Finally, we know that Vaude will show the Novum 3D backpack prototype at OutDoor by ISPO 2022 in June this year, and then try to turn it into a real, mass-marketed product.
