Nvidia boasts DLSS boosts GeForce RTX FPS up to 50%

At least according to 3DMark Port Royal.

Nvidia brags that DLSS technology can affect frame rates and image quality on GeForce RTX-series graphics cards – in supported games coming soon – and now you can see it with Port Royal 3DMark, which supports DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling ).

Port Royal is a benchmark designed for active ray tracing testing and performance evaluation of GeForce RTX graphics cards. As mentioned, the latest version supports DLSS and was released alongside a new set of Nvidia graphics drivers (which you will need to test DLSS).

These drivers, by the way, include support for laptops running on RTX graphics solutions.

According to Nvidia’s own testing at Port Royal, DLSS can boost GeForce RTX GPU performance by 50%. This is a huge benefit if the numbers are justified, and perhaps the most exciting news is that the cheapest graphics card, the RTX 2060, will get the most performance gains.

The RTX 2060 saw a nearly 50% performance improvement on Nvidia’s test bed, built around a 5.2GHz Intel Core i7-8086K processor backed by 32GB of RAM. The performance of the RTX 2070 is up nearly 45%, while the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti are just below 40%. All this in a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Of course, you shouldn’t take Nvidia’s word for it. If you have one of these graphics cards and 3DMark (with the Port Royal update), just make sure to install the new Nvidia drivers – and you should be using the Windows 10 October 2018 Update – and you can see and appreciate the benefits of DLSS on your build. Check out Nvidia’s blog for detailed instructions on getting it up and running.

DETAILS

Remember that this is not only about higher frame rates, but also about higher quality images. Nvidia is posting dozens of comparison graphics snapshots with and without DLSS on the aforementioned blog to illustrate the differences.

And those differences include a significantly sharper level of overall detail, along with better anti-aliasing, increased detail and when viewing scenes through transparent surfaces such as windows. There is also a comparison video that you can see below.

Of course, before we succumb to the excitement, we must be aware of the extremely limited support for DLSS. Outside of this benchmark, the only game DLSS has to offer is Final Fantasy XV.

However, Nvidia has made it clear that DLSS will soon be arriving in Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider alongside Anthem and Metro Exodus (the latter two games have yet to be released but will debut later this month).

Nvidia adds that we should expect “numerous” other DLSS-enabled games throughout 2019. We hope so for all users of the RTX series graphics cards.
