NVIDIA chips could be made by Intel, says Jensen Huang

Intel is expanding its chip manufacturing capabilities with the IDM 2.0 initiative, and NVIDIA could become one of its customers. The information came from NVIDIA’s own CEO, Jensen Huang, during a press conference. Although they are direct competitors, Huang would consider Intel to manufacture his products.

“Being a factory of the caliber of TSMC is not for the faint of heart. This is a change not only in the technological process or investment capital, but a change in culture”, comments the CEO of NVIDIA.

“Our strategy is to expand our supply base with diversity and redundancy at all layers. On the chip layer, on the substrate layer, on the system layer, on all layers. We’ve diversified the number of processes, we’ve diversified the number of foundries, and Intel is a great partner for us. They are interested in us using their smelters, and we are very interested in exploring it,” said Huang.

The NVIDIA CEO explains that the association with Intel is not new and is not limited to one manufacturing the other’s project. “Our relationship with Intel is even long. We work with them in many other areas. We collaborate on every PC, every notebook, every supercomputer,” says Jensen Huang. He also says that he is interested in following Intel’s technological process as a factory.

Choosing a new foundry is not an easy task and cannot be solved overnight, says Huang: “Discussions with foundries take a long time and it’s not just wishful thinking. We have to align the technology, the business models have to be aligned, the capacity has to be aligned, the operations processes and the nature of the two companies have to be aligned, we are not buying milk here. It’s about integrating everything into the supply chain,” explains Huang.

About Intel knowing first-hand about NVIDIA’s plans, Jensen Huang says that they are too old to deal with it and that competitors have always known their intentions in the industry. “We have been working closely with Intel, sharing our roadmap with them long before it goes public, for years. Intel has known our secrets for years. AMD has known our secrets for years”, clarifies the CEO of NVIDIA.

“We are sophisticated and mature enough to realize that we have to collaborate. We share roadmaps, of course, under confidentiality in a very selective communication channel. The industry has already learned to work this way,” he says.

It will be interesting to see this partnership come to fruition. The truth is that, with greater ease, agility and efficiency in the manufacture of chips, regardless of who manufactures them, the supply increases and that is always good for us, the last link in this chain.
