Nvidia DLSS arrives in Rust and gets extended support in Linux

Nvidia continues to put a lot of effort into making its DLSS upscaling technology available. The technology is based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, using local calculations with the Tensor cores in the Geforce RTX 2000 series and Geforce RTX 3000 series. New games are announced as closely as possible that support the technology, and at the beginning of June, a dozen titles were added in connection with Computex 2021.

Among the titles that have been promised DLSS support, Rainbow Six Siege, among others, has already had it implemented. Doom Eternal and Lego Builders Journey have not reached it yet, but in a new update, the date will be set for 29 and 22 June, respectively. Red Dead Redemption 2 and a handful of other titles continue to be referred to as “soon”. The list of games also gets new company in the form of the survival game Rust, which gets DLSS from 1 July.

NVIDIA DLSS support for Vulkan API games will be available from June 22nd on Proton, enabling Linux gamers to use the dedicated AI Tensor Cores of their GeForce RTX GPUs to accelerate frame rates in DOOM Eternal, No Man’s Sky, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Support for DLSS-enhanced DirectX titles running via Proton will arrive this Fall.

In the same update, Nvidia also confirms that support for DLSS in Linux will be rolled out from 22 June. The support is limited and has been developed in collaboration with Valve, which means that DLSS will be available via Proton for titles that use the Vulkan interface. There are currently three games available, DOOM Eternal, No Man’s Sky and Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Support for DirectX titles is expected this fall.

As a final note, a plug-in is presented, plugin, to DLSS for the game engine Unreal Engine 5. It is already available for the predecessor Unreal Engine 4, but can now also be used in the new version since July 17. Support is also underway for the game engine Unity, in connection with the update 2021.2 which will be launched at the end of the year.
