Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 could get faster with GDDR6 memory

Halfway to Super.

Guess what all Nvidia Turing graphics cards have in common? That’s right, they got rid of the outdated GDDR5 video memory. Well, with the exception of certain representatives of the series: GeForce GTX 1660 and GTX 1650 from Nvidia. But everything can change.

Discovered by the guys from Videocardz, the latest EEC document includes a list of new MSI graphics cards, among which are the GTX 1650 graphics cards. And no, this is not talking about some GTX 1650 Super, which we have already seen upgraded to GDDR6 along with the GTX 1660 Super. Instead, we are talking about older GTX 1650 video cards on boards that are also equipped with fast GDDR6 video memory.

The information is somewhat consistent with previously leaked benchmarks for GTX 1650 models with GDDR6, although at the time we assumed the information was for notebook graphics cards.

On the one hand, the step makes sense. The rest of the Nvidia Turing GPUs run on GDDR6, so why not give the GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 some upgraded VRAM?

But it’s not that simple. Upgrading to GDDR6 is exactly what Nvidia did for the GTX 1650 and 1660 with the Super iterations. In the case of the GTX 1660, the only significant difference between them and the models without the Super console was the new video memory. The upgrade to GDDR6 leaves the Super models with a very slight edge over the non-Super models.

The GTX 1650 Super is getting a big performance boost just through the GDDR6 update, along with an increase in the number of CUDA cores and a boost in clock speed. This means that upgrading to GDDR6 video memory on video cards without the Super prefix will cut the line between the two generations of video cards, although it will not completely erase it. For the GTX 1660, however, any potential upgrade to GDDR6 blurs the difference between the Super and the original GTX.

This update could make Nvidia’s series of graphics cards a little more confusing, although it will improve performance, which is important for end customers. This solution is also useful, as at one time the GeForce GT 1030 came with DDR4 and then was upgraded to GDDR5.
