Nvidia is investing in games in 4K resolution

The future is spelled 4K, at least if you can believe the electronics giants, who are now looking away from the fruitless investment in stereoscopic 3D and instead put the hope in a new generation of high-resolution screens and TVs. The lack of 4K-resolved movies and TV series, on the other hand, risks dampening consumer interest, but some forms of entertainment can already benefit from the technology.

4K truly is the next big thing, and once you’ve seen and experienced its awesomeness you’ll never want to go back to plain Jane resolutions ever again.

Graphics giant Nvidia sees a great opportunity to persuade gamers to upgrade and is now investing in marketing lavish graphics cards and SLI solutions for 4K resolution. It is of course about the Geforce GTX Titan, but also two or more Geforce GTX 770 and up are said to be suitable for games in the high resolution.

Nvidia lists several arguments for 4K resolution, including that the human eye can perceive about 50 pixels per degree of vision (pixels per degree of vision, ppd) at a distance of 50 centimeters. A standard 27-inch monitor with 1080p resolution delivers 19.3 ppd, while the latest 31.5-inch 4K screens raise the bar to 35.6 ppd.

At the same time, Nvidia is taking the opportunity to give a boot to the competitor AMD. The latest screens from Sharp and Asus function as two “image halves” of 1,920 × 2,160 pixels, this to enable a refresh rate of 60 Hz with existing interfaces. Graphics cards in Crossfire are unable to synchronize the two halves, resulting in artifacts and broken frames.

However, AMD promises to fix the problem in future versions of the Catalyst driver package by enabling frame pacing even for higher resolutions than the current limit of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.
