Incredibly powerful graphics cards are coming … but when?

When it comes to the best graphics cards, Nvidia’s variety of powerful GPUs is unmatched. From the evil, powerful GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics pump to the entry-level GTX 1050 – and everything in between – Nvidia continues to dominate the PC graphics card market.

However, with gamers demanding the highest levels of graphics performance, and tech companies and researchers of all sorts demanding advanced AI functionality and GPU computing power, even the best graphics cards need constant improvement. This is why Nvidia is working hard to develop the Nvidia Volta, the next generation architecture for professionals.

Nvidia actually released two Volta graphics cards in 2017, but both were prohibitively expensive – as they were aimed at academics and professional artists – so don’t expect to see them on top gaming PCs anytime soon. However, we are keen to see the next GeForce GTX graphics cards given the major performance leap we are looking forward to.

That doesn’t mean the Nvidia Volta isn’t impressive – it definitely is, especially when the Volta’s development results are embodied in AI-powered tensor cores on Nvidia Turing graphics cards, including the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080.

As mentioned above, Nvidia’s Volta architecture has already hit the market, albeit not in a form that you would be able to use on your gaming PC. The Tesla V100 was first introduced to the world in May 2017 as a professional-grade GPU designed to empower AI and support data centers. This is not a consumer grade device.

On the other hand, the Nvidia Titan V, released in December 2017, is considered a consumer device, but you can start laughing at the price now, the graphics card costs $ 2,999. Titan V is designed for explorers and other high-performance computing needs, not just to make PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds look pretty.

Since Nvidia Volta graphics cards are exclusively for the graphics market professionals, don’t expect them to be available to build your gaming PC. The existing Titan V and Tesla V100 based on the Volta are ridiculously expensive graphics cards, the Titan V costs $ 2999 (195,000 rubles + VAT), while the Tesla V100 will cost you about $ 8799 (572,000 rubles + VAT) – definitely not the graphics cards you want to use to run. When it comes to consumer-grade graphics cards, we don’t think Volta will ever release one. Instead, the Nvidia Turing comes with real-time ray tracing, which comes with a price tag that’s acceptable to the modern gamer.

Volta introduces a new 12nm manufacturing process that dramatically speeds up processors from the 16nm process you find on Pascal cards.

What exactly does this mean?

Well, this means that technology partner Nvidia TSMC will be able to fit many more transistors in a device of comparable size, which will provide a huge boost to computing power. You get better performance, not to mention significant energy savings.

The Titan V packaged 21.1 billion transistors, which combined to provide an astonishing 110 teraflops of processing power. The new Tensor Cores are designed to accelerate deep learning features with up to nine times the power of the Titan Xp graphics card. The video card is also twice as efficient in power consumption.

Among other things, the Titan V has six GPU clusters with 5,120 CUDA cores (3,840 in the Titan Xp) and 320 texture units and 1200 MHz base frequencies that can grow up to 1455 MHz. With 12GB of HBM2 memory on board, the Titan V has 652.8GB / s of memory bandwidth.

Nvidia’s latest spec update is surprising, as the company advocated increased GDDR5X memory speeds on flagship graphics cards only last year.

The Nvidia Titan V is the first graphics card on a production line to use high-speed memory outside of Quadro and Tesla components. Whether this could mean HBM2 will become the backbone of the Volta remains to be seen.

All told, this is a potentially huge upgrade over the latest generation of Nvidia graphics cards.

But let’s back down for a moment, because all we can do right now is compare the $ 3,000 graphics card to the $ 1,200 graphics card that came before it – comparable numbers just won’t give a complete understanding of what we’ll see in consumer GeForce graphics cards. that will eventually hit the market. We’ll likely get smaller versions of the Nvidia Titan V at lower prices, so they won’t reach the peak performance that their progenitor is capable of.

Based on early performance numbers, the Volta appears to be able to offer a lot more Pascal GPUs – and even with enough power, Volta seems poised to plug in AI to take professional workloads to levels never seen before.
