Health!

Having retrieved Alien: Isolation a short time ago, I told myself that a little performance test with the graphics cards and processors in my possession was in order! Do not expect a thorough test with 50 graphics cards and 50 processors, we do what we can with what we have 😀 Here we go!

For the tests 2 machines are available, a machine based on an Intel processor and an AMD machine:

Intel:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 4670K
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87-UD5H TH
  • Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
  • Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
  • Food: Seasonic X650
  • Drivers: Catalyst 14.9.2 beta
  • Operating system: Windows 8.1 64bits

AMD:

  • Processor: AMD FX8370E
  • Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer
  • Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
  • Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
  • Food: Seasonic X650
  • Drivers: Catalyst 14.9.2 beta
  • Operating system: Windows 8.1 64bits

For the purposes of the test I used the graphics cards at my disposal, namely:

  • XFX R9 290 Double Dissipation (tested here)
  • Asus R9 280 Strix (tested here)
  • Gigabyte R9 270 OC (tested here)
  • Sapphire HD5850 Toxic

Yes even a small Radeon HD5850, it can’t hurt to see how it fares in today’s games.

Alien: Isolation own a built-in benchmark which is supposed to test the performance of the cards on all the effects of the graphics engine, as we will see this benchmark shoots only on the graphics card and there will be no difference in performance between the different processors .
The tests were done in a resolution of 1920 × 1080 with all the details to the maximum except for the anisotropic filtering on 8X, the SSAO set to HDAO and of course the Vsync to Off

As we can see in the benchmark all cards can run Alien: Isolation, even the aging HD5850, on the other hand we can clearly see that the processors are not pushed since the results are almost identical between the FX8370E from AMD and the Core i5 4670K from Intel. FPS will therefore be less important in game during explosions and NPC display.
However, we can conclude without getting too wet that an R9 270 will be a very good starting point for playing in very good conditions at 1920 × 1080, reducing certain details during busy scenes. The R9 280 and R9 290 should not have the slightest problem in this resolution regardless of the graphics settings 🙂
