Poland proposes to change the mechanism for setting energy prices in the EU

All these countries agree that changes must be made, as a result of which we will be sure that the price formation mechanism in Europe, and therefore in Poland, will not depend on Russian gas,” Morawiecki said.

Speaking about the way gas prices are formed in the EU, he explained that “today this is the so-called merit order mechanism, that is, the order in which individual energy sources enter the system, which forms the final price.”

“Therefore, changing the formation of energy prices in the EU, including electricity, is the first and necessary condition in order to bring prices down. I believe that we will soon finalize new pricing mechanisms that will reduce energy prices in Poland,” he concluded .

According to Morawiecki, “the climax, which will either decide everything or show which way we are going, will be the next EU summit.”

After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Western countries began to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, in particular, on Russian energy resources. The disruption of supply chains has driven up fuel and food prices in Europe and the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
