“Radeon RX 6000 will not be a paper launch”

At launches of sought-after products, the company behind the product may not be able to meet demand, with the result that a limited part of the speculators get hold of a unit. Launches with limited access are usually in the technology industry called a paper launch, ie the products are launched on paper but not really in practice. With the Geforce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, for example, Nvidia has not been able to satisfy demand, with disappointed customers as a result.

This has led some to look worried even at AMD’s upcoming graphics card in the Radeon RX 6000 series, which will be unveiled in October. Such a concerned graphics card enthusiast airs his concern in a post on Twitter, where the person bets $ 10 if the Radeon RX 6000 does not become a paper launch. Frank Azor, chief architect of the gaming area at AMD, answers that he is looking forward to winning the bet.

In subsequent Twitter posts, further individuals promise to invite Frank Azor to various sums and restaurant visits if AMD manages to avoid weak access at the launch of the Radeon RX 6000 series, offers and invites he responds with the same measure of confidence as in the original response. Strong confidence in the possibilities of a hard launch, however, says nothing about exactly how good AMD’s availability will be when the order ports open.

AMD, like companies such as Nvidia, Sony, Microsoft and Apple, has been making the product news during a period plagued by a global pandemic, something that affects several stages in the production chain. If the supply is as good as Frank Azor’s confident post suggests, the company has probably started production early, and is arranging the launch event relatively late in the year to provide additional time to increase production volumes.

If the company continues to use TSMC’s 7-nanometer manufacturing technology, the proven work chain will probably enable a high degree of functioning, which Nvidia may not do to the same extent as the company switches to Samsung’s 8-nanometer technology with the Geforce RTX 3000 “Ampere” series .

AMD presents the Radeon RX 6000 series with the RDNA 2 architecture under the hood on October 28, 2020. Then it will be clear if the supply will be as good as indicated, and if a larger amount of graphics memory will be one of AMD’s major selling points in competition with Nvidia .
