Raptor Lake's new voltage regulator could reduce consumption by up to 25%

One of the most criticized points of Alder Lake is its high consumption, which can reach 300W in the case of the Core i9-12900K, and luckily, it seems that Intel has a solution to improve this aspect in its successor, Raptor Lake. These processors will have a new Digital Linear Voltage Regulator (DLVR), which will help reduce the voltage required for the processor, generating a reduction in consumption of up to 25%.

The inclusion of the DLVR in Raptor Lake had already been announced by Intel earlier this year although we did not have many details on how it would work. These doubts were clarified after the publication of an Intel patent related to this technology, which ensures that the use of an additional voltage regulator after the primary regulation system (the VRM of the motherboard) allows to reduce the consumption of the cores of the CPU.

According to Intel tests, the implementation of DLVR on a test chip allowed to reduce the voltage used by the CPU by 160mV, which caused a reduction in consumption of between 20 and 25% depending on the tasks. Intel also tested what would happen if we maintain the level of consumption and raise the frequency with that additional margin that we have by consuming less at the initial frequencies, and concluded that a 7% higher performance can be achieved with the same consumption thanks to the implementation of DLVR .

In addition to the use of DLVR, Raptor Lake will add an additional 8 high-efficiency cores, have IPC improvements for both high-performance cores and high-efficiency cores, and have a larger and higher-performance cache, so It will be an interesting update to keep Intel competitive against Zen 4 in late 2022.

What do you think about the implementation of this new voltage regulator at Raptor Lake? Would you like Intel to have implemented it at Alder Lake?
