MSI GeForce RTX 3070 from the Gaming X Trio family is the senior model in the hierarchy and is aimed at conquering the segment. The manufacturer used a simple, but very effective formula for success: a less hot chip, a more top-end cooler from the RTX 3090. And this gave an amazing effect.

Packaging and equipment

The MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio video card comes in a black colorful packaging with a picture of the novelty.

Not really revealing details, but a little description is on the back of the box. The list of technologies and brief technical characteristics are given here: apparently the buyer has read reviews in advance and knows everything about the video card, so the packaging is laconic.

Inside is familiar equipment from a user manual, a comic book with a dragon, a couple of brochures and a bracket.

The latter is needed to fix the video card in the case and to protect the accelerator from sagging with a large mass of new items.

Appearance and design

The MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio also received the updated design of the MSI Gaming X Trio line with virtually no changes: a powerful cooling system with three fans and characteristic stripes in the center in the form of some kind of claws.

The manufacturer did not compromise and equipped the new product with a similar cooler, which added dimensions to the model. With a total weight of ~ 1.5 kg, the video card takes up almost three expansion slots, has a length of 323 mm and a width of 140 mm.

On the other hand, literally and figuratively, is the graphene backplate: a hard, graphene-coated plastic base plate. He, in turn, inherited from the Ventus models.

Additional power is provided by a pair of 8-pin connectors, giving a total of 375 watts of power for the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio, but its actual consumption is lower, and is limited by the BIOS at around 240 watts.

Cooling system

The design of the radiator uses direct contact technology, which, according to the developers, has a positive effect on the cooling efficiency, because it is possible to arrange more square-shaped heat pipes in this projection. However, the principle itself is inferior to a nickel-plated copper plate: for example, this was used in the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X model from the previous review. The reason for such manipulations is unknown, perhaps a marketing move + unwillingness to make an absolutely powerful cooler for cooling.

The last section of the radiator covers the throttles of the VRM power unit and a tiny radiator, although it seems to me it would be better to leave direct airflow for the latter, and not block it with a thermal pad.

The mounting support rib remains on the video card and ..

.. the same VRM heatsink. Despite its size, it turned out to be enough for the set goals, but the manufacturer could better implement the cooling of the mosfets.

Printed circuit board

MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio is built on an original PCB of its own production, from the version of the NVIDIA reference. The PCB version carries the internal number V390 ver2.0.

Testing tools and methodology

For overclocking video cards, as well as monitoring temperatures and fan speeds, we used the proprietary MSI Afterburner utility.

To check the temperature conditions of the video card in conditions close to everyday ones, we used the 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme stability test.

The noise level was measured using a TM-102 digital sound level meter. The measurements were taken from a distance of 30 cm. The background noise level in the room is no more than 28 dBA. All system fans were turned off. On the graphs, the conditional noiselessness limit for the system is determined at the level of 30.5 dBA, the conditional comfort limit is 37 dBA. The room temperature was 25 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, readings of the power consumption were taken using a Robiton PM-2 wattmeter and the temperature of the printed circuit board with a Fluke 59 Max IR thermometer.

The MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio received a factory overclocking of as much as 100 MHz in the boost, which is a very decent result.

Thanks to the massive cooling system, the novelty is very cold when idle, and the manufacturer boldly equipped it with the “Zero Frozr” technology. We get the following indicators:

In games and applications, the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio graphics card performs very well! The novelty boosts up to 2040 MHz, and keeps the average value at around 1950-1980 MHz at a temperature of 62 ° C, and the cooling system barely spins up to 1300 rpm. The secret to success is simple: less TDP, more metal in the heatsink.

The power subsystem warms up to 71 ° C.

However, the cooling system does not stop before this! At full power, the heating of the GPU and the power section is reduced to 49 ° C and 55 ° C, respectively.

With such a cooler, downvolting on the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio makes no sense, but in order to beat off 50 watts of consumption, you can lower the voltage to 900 mV. These settings automatically make the video card work in a more comfortable environment: the chip and VRM warm up to 58 ° C and 66 ° C at a fan speed of 1100 rpm.

In any case, the world community has already tested non-reference RTX 3070 models, and the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio video card is among them, I’m not afraid of the verdict, the best, and my measurements have confirmed this.
