Samsung SDS will launch a blockchain system for processing medical insurance claims

The IT division of the international technology giant Samsung SDS plans this month to deploy a blockchain-based medical claims processing system.

According to a report by CoinDesk Korea, Samsung SDS vice president Yoon Shim said at the Blockchain Seoul 2019 event that the company has been piloting the system since August this year.

Yoon added that medical facilities and insurers took part in a pilot project to confirm its effectiveness, and the system will be launched this month, according to another report. The deployable network aims to simplify the complex process, in which the patient receives a receipt for the services provided and transfers the documents to the insurance company, which then must check their accuracy before the claims are paid.

Samsung SDS notes that although most Koreans are well-insured and should not have any personal expenses, they often do not claim to be paid to the insurance company due to the complex procedures that this process entails.

The new blockchain healthcare network will bring together hospitals, pharmacies, insurers and other companies in this sector. When the system starts working, users will receive messages in the KakaoTalk messenger after treatment. Then they will be able to choose to receive a receipt and insurance compensation, after which their information is sent to the insurer.

Samsung SDS believes that the network will reduce the workload in medical institutions, waiting time for claims to be processed and reduce the cost of processing claims to 70%.

The use of blockchain in the medical field can be found more and more often. In July, it became known that the Longenesis medical data market will provide
its blockchain platform for consent for medical interventions to Hanshin Medipia Medical Center and Infinity Care.

In February, it was also announced that Bitfury, MDW and Longenesis will develop a blockchain platform.
to share and protect medical images and
diagnostic information such as x-ray scan results and
computed tomography.
