Samsung starts manufacturing GDDR6 memory

In connection with the launch of the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080, GDDR5X was introduced, a further development of GDDR5 with higher bandwidth. For some time now, the industry has been working on the regular sequel GDDR6, which will handle even higher speeds and be paired with the next generation of graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD.

Last year, both Samsung and SK Hynix presented their GDDR6 memories and now the former announce that they have begun production of GDDR6 memory on a large scale. The circuits are based on Samsung’s 10-nanometer technology and have a speed of 18 Gbps or 72 GB / s over a 32-bit memory bus, which is more than twice as much as for the company’s GDDR5 memory.

When it comes to memory, no details are mentioned, but it is expected to be at least 16 Gb (2 GB) per capsule. According to Samsung, the new memory chips play a big role when it comes to the launch of the next generation graphics card, which is primarily believed to include Nvidia’s Volta architecture.

When products with GDDR6 memory will find their way onto the market is still unknown, but previous reports suggest that this will happen during the first quarter of 2018.
