Smuggling of Nvidia CMP cards, 300 units seized by Hong Kong customs

When we learn of a seizure by customs authorities, we generally think of drugs or counterfeit material. But times have changed and now smugglers trade cards to mine cryptocurrencies.

It’s news the latest operation of Hong Kong customs agents, who have managed to foil the smuggling of Nvidia CMP accelerators (Crypto Mining Processor), as many as 300 units of the H30X model, the least powerful among the proposals intended for the public of miners.

CMP H30X accelerators have been found aboard a suspect fishing boat anchored just outside Hong Kong International Airport. The smugglers were moving the crates from the fishing boat onto a speedboat at 2am, but they were discovered and after a daring chase they managed to escape.

Worse, however, went to the owner of the fishing boat and to the rest of the stolen goods: on board the ship were found sea cucumbers and shark fins, but also technological products for a value of almost 260 thousand dollars such as smartphones and as many as 300 CMP cards no better identified, i.e. without brands or stickers, but recognizable by the absence of video outputs.

The CMP H30X is a GPU TU116 Turing and according to Nvidia it reaches a hash rate in Ethereum mining up to 26 MH / s: these are not exciting performances, but probably sufficient to tackle the smuggling in a period of shortage. In recent days, however, the news of the purchase of CMP cards for a value of 30 million dollars by Hut 8 Mining Corporation.
