Qualcomm held its Snapdragon Tech Summit and officially announced the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the new flagship chip that we will find in upcoming premium phones. This new chipset brings significant improvements in all aspects: CPU, GPU, AI and camera.
First of all, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has the following CPU configuration:
According to the company’s claims, this new CPU configuration is 20% faster and has a 30% more efficient consumption than the previous Snapdragon 888. This is achieved thanks to the 4nm manufacturing process and the ARMv9 architecture.
In the case of the GPU, the new Adreno is 30% faster in graphics rendering and consumes 25% less power than the Adreno 660. In addition, it is compatible with the Vulkan 1.1 API, which promises a 60% more performance.
The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 comes with the new Spectra 680 image signal processor. This has a bandwidth of 3.2 Gigapixels per second, which allows you to record video a 108MP a 30FPS. As if that weren’t enough, you can also record 8K video with HDR and take 64MP stills at the same time.
There are also other configurations available for the Spectra 680, including support for three 64MP cameras recording 30FPS video in unison. What’s more, 240 12MP images can be captured in one second and its new Ultrawide Motor prevents image distortion. Qualcomm also includes super resolution for video to improve zoom.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also includes the 7th. generation of Qualcomm’s AI engine, enabling it to achieve a 400% higher performance than previous generation. This is because it has twice the Tensor Cores, twice the shared memory, and is 1.7 times more efficient than the AI engine of the Snapdragon 888.
Lastly, this chipset will also include the Snapdragon X65 5G modem. This new chip reaches speeds of up to 10Gbps and is compatible with Wi-Fi 6E. In addition, the company claims that for the first time, lossless CD-quality Bluetooth audio can be streamed.
Without a doubt, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 represents a breakthrough over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 888. We will soon see it in action when it is available on top-of-the-range Android phones. Additionally, Qualcomm will also announce the Snapdragon G3x SoC for handheld consoles tonight.
