Hi all!

AMD recently updated its FX range in socket AMD3 + with 3 new processors, or rather new versions, the FX8370, FX8370E and FX8320E. All 3 are based on Vishera equipped with 4 modules and 8 cores, the FX8370 offers a maximum frequency of 4.3GHz (4GHz base / TDP of 125 Watts) and is therefore a minor evolution of the FX8350 (4.2Ghz max / 4Ghz base) while the FX8370E (4.3GHz / 3.3GHz) and FX8320E (4.2GHz / 3GHz) are versions with lower consumption, here is a small table which will be more telling:

As we can see the TDP goes from 125Watts for the FX8xxx to 95Watts for the F8xxxE but a lower base frequency, the price of $ 199.99 is the same between the FX8370 and the FX8370E which is the subject of the test today. Let’s see what the little FX8370E has in the belly!

The FX8370E therefore has the same characteristics as the other FX8xxx processors with the exception of the TDP and the base frequency, the memory supported is always DDR3 1866MHz (of course the lower frequencies will also work!) And the caches L2 and L3 remain at 8MB.

At rest the FX8370E operates at a frequency of 1.4Ghz for a voltage of 0.84V, let’s see what this gives with a load on 1 core:

The turbo is good at 4.3GHz when only 1 core is in charge for a voltage of 1.336V, let’s see what this gives during a 100% load of the processor:

At 100% load we fall on the base frequency of 3.3GHz for a voltage of 1.12V, which means that without overclocking the processor will remain at this frequency during heavy loads.

For the tests 2 machines are available, a machine based on an Intel processor and an AMD machine:

The test protocol

In order to have results covering a wide range of applications, I chose the following benchmarks:

  • Fritz Chess
  • WinRAR 5.11 64bit: integrated benchmark
  • Wprime 2.10: benchmark 32M
  • Cinebench R15: benchmark 1 thread et Multhread
  • Handbrake: encoding a 600MB Full HD avi file to mkv
  • Unigine Heaven 4.0
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Physics
  • Anno 2070: maximum quality, FPS were calculated under FRAPS by loading a save and doing a series of pre-recorded actions.
  • Crysis 3: maximum quality, FPS were calculated under FRAPS by loading a save and doing a series of pre-recorded actions.
  • Bioshock Infinite: maximum quality, integrated benchmark
  • Tomb Raider: maximum quality, integrated benchmark

Note that the games run at 1920 x 1080, which is the current “standard”.

Performances Applications

As we can see the FX8370E is struggling a lot against the Core i5 4670K. Under WinRAR it is without a doubt better than the 4670K, but this is about the only test that shows the superiority of the AMD processor. Indeed in the other tests it arrives at best at the same level as the Intel processor, as under Wprime, Cinebench R15 and Fritz Chess (in the Multithread benchmark only). To sum up, the FX8370E defends itself against the Core i5 4670K when applications use mass multithreading, but once this is not the case it unfortunately cannot keep pace.

3D Performances and Games

Let’s start with the pure benchmarks, under Unigine Heaven and 3DMark Fire Strike the 2 processors are neck and neck and despite a very slight lead from the Core i5 4670K I can declare the 2 processors tied!
In the 4 games tested on the other hand there are 2 scenarios, the games having a strong tendency to need a lot of computing power like Anno 2070 and Crysis 3 and the games which rather require graphic power like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite. Under Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite the 2 processors are very similar and both offer equivalent performance, the limitation will therefore be at the level of the graphics card, on the other hand under Anno 2070 and Crysis 3 there the FX8370E cannot fight and s’ Unfortunately, it leans very clearly in front of the core i5 4670K with 15FPS less under Anno and 9FPS less under Crysis 3.

Consumption

At rest the AMD machine consumes 76 Watts at the outlet, against 65 Watts for the Intel machine, the difference is not huge. On load on the other hand and despite a TDP of 95 Watts for the AMD FX8370E processor (against 84 Watts for the Core i5 4670K) the AMD machine flies up to 180 Watts against 140 Watts, 40 Watts more only with a processor load n is not nothing and the trend for higher consumption from AMD processors is becoming clearer here.

The FX8370E is a low consumption processor compared to the rest of the FX8xxx range from AMD, the purchase of this type of processor is therefore generally motivated by a desire to lower the overall consumption of the machine if not as much to turn to a version 125 Watts (like the FX8370 for example) which will be more efficient. Despite everything, a processor test cannot be finished without seeing what the little one has in the stomach, so let’s go!

The FX8370E overclocked very well despite the significant VDrop of the Asrock 990FX Killer Fatal1ty, indeed to stabilize the processor at 4.8GHz it was necessary to set the processor voltage to 1.43V and the LLC to the maximum in order to reach a voltage in 1.376V load.
The maximum stable frequency is therefore 4.8GHz (+ 45%!) For the FX8370E that I have in my hands, the processor could start higher but was not stable in the benchmarks, not to mention the voltage and the temperatures which would have harmed the processor. Let’s see the results of this overclocking:

As we can see the gains are rather substantial with the overclocking applied especially when the applications use all the cores, in fact the gain is less when a single core is used because the original FX8370E operates at 4.3GHz.

3D overclocking and games

In games the result once again depends on the predominance of needing processor or graphics power, under Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite the gains are almost zero but on the other hand under 3DMark Fire Strike Physics, Anno 2070 and Crysis the gains are really substantial . We go from 6208 to 8815 (+ 42%) under 3DMark Fire Strike Physics, from 35 to 42 FPS (+ 20%) under Anno2070 and from 31 to 37 FPS under Crysis 3 (+ 19%), the results obtained thanks to the overclocking are therefore quite excellent!

Overclocking Consumption

This overclocking is necessarily nothing trivial in terms of consumption because the configuration goes from 180 Watts to the original socket with only the processor in charge at 328 Watts! Suffice to say that the small FX8370E is hungry for Watts once overclocked.

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the latest addition to the FX range from AMD?
AMD has decided to release an 8-core processor with reduced consumption compared to the classic 125 Watts, with a TDP of 95 Watts the frequencies in charge take a hit and go from 4GHz for the classic FX8370 to 3.3GHz for the FX8370. In terms of performance, the results are mixed, in application it is able to titillate the Intel Core i5 4670K during heavy multithreaded loads but is no match when a single core is loaded. As far as games are concerned, the FX8370E lags behind when it comes to demanding a lot of processor power (anno 2070, Crysis3 ..) but is sufficient to maintain a perfectly acceptable fluidity when it comes to games using power. graphic above all.
Regarding overclocking, and even if this is not really the goal for a processor which is particularly studied for a measured consumption the FX8370E is doing very well with a maximum frequency which goes from 3.3GHz to 4.8GHz or an overclocking of 45%! Consumption is also greatly affected by going from 180Watts in charge to 328Watts, which is quite enormous.

The price of $ 199.99 puts it against the more powerful FX8370 but also with higher consumption, if for some reason Intel processors are not for you and you are looking for a processor with raw power and decent in-game performance then the FX8370E may be a good alternative.
