South Korea will develop a successor to the Blue Shark torpedo for destroying submarines

The K745 Blue Shark light torpedo for destroying submarines, which was developed in 2004 for the Republic of Korea Navy, will have a completely new, better version, which is now referred to as the “light torpedo-2”. It currently weighs 280 kg, is 2.7 meters long, and has a range of 19 km.

We still do not know the details, but it is certain that the LIG Nex1 will be responsible for creating the successor to the Blue Shark torpedo

LIG Nex1 is responsible for developing the basic project, which announced on April 4 that it had been selected for this task by the South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) agency. Now there are negotiations ahead of it to conclude a contract worth an estimated KRW 150 billion by 2029, which will result in a new torpedo deployed on surface ships to increase the ability to neutralize and destroy enemy submarines.

In developing the Blue Shark, the guidance system is to be significantly improved, because this torpedo is said to be able to react quickly to decoys improved by the enemy, and to hit the target faster and more accurately from a greater distance. Several other SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) are involved in the system development project.
