Steam Hardware Surveys Show Low Growth Due to Chip Shortage

Steam revealed the results of its latest hardware survey and the effects of the chip shortage are evident. Apparently, only 5 models of graphics cards had a share increase of more than 0.10%. The most significant growth was the GTX 1660 with 0.35%.

While the 6 most popular cards on Steam lost ground, the percentage increases for specific models are lower than on previous occasions. For example, the largest increase in August was the RTX 2060 with 1.35%, while in October the best performance of the month was the GTX 1660 with only 0.35%. On the other hand, only 7 entries on the list managed to achieve a gain of 0.10% or more, and most of them are embedded or mobile GPUs. This situation reflects graphics card availability issues and constant price increases. Both Ampere and RDNA 2 are still very hard to come by and at very high prices.

Regarding processors, more users turned to AMD CPUs. The company had its lowest point in August with 27.31%. However, in September it recovered and exceeded the 30% mark. Now, polls show their Steam share hit a new high of 30.84%. This is supported by consulting which are the best-selling processors on Amazon. Seven of the top 10 best-selling processors are from AMD:

Finally, the Steam survey shows that Linux users hit a new high of 1.13%. 40% of them use AMD processors. Windows 11 made its first appearance on the list with a 1.82% share and Oculus Quest 2 reaffirmed its leadership in the virtual reality section with 33.19% share. This may have been driven by the fact that the device will no longer require a Facebook account.

Are you surprised by these low earnings in the graphics card section of the Steam survey?
