As we wrote a week ago, Chromebooks are the perfect choices for office work and media browsing. These are mainly cheaper laptops with mediocre specifications that use the ChromeOS system with a very limited number of supported applications. So it’s a surprise that Steam on Chromebooks is now officially available.
Google has officially released the Steam platform on Chromebooks
Today, Google, after a rather subtle announcement, has published instructions on how to run Steam on ChromeOS on supported hardware. Unfortunately, this is not much, because the requirement includes newer devices – models with Intel Iris Xe graphics, 11th generation Core i5 or i7 processors and at least 8 GB of RAM.

Currently, Steam on Chromebooks is available in the alpha version, which is mainly supported by ASUS models, because:
- Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1W)
- Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
- Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
- Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
- ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
- ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
- HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook
- Lenovo 5i-14 Chromebook
Google warns of potential stability issues and a not particularly simple installation process. However, when you deal with it, you will be able to play a number of games checked by Google in versions tailored for Linux, including:
- Portal 2
- Dota 2
- Team Fortress 2
- Half-Life 2 Celeste
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Hades
- Fallout 4
- Cuphead
- TEKKEN 7
