Test – Asus ROG Strix RTX 2060 OC

Introduction

Hi all!

The entry-level RTX card from Nvidia was released a few days ago, and we offered you the test of the reference version (see here). Today, it is a “custom” model which passes through our hands, the Asus ROG Strix RTX 2060 OC not to name it! On the program, a cooling system different from that of Nvidia of course, turbo frequencies revised upwards (OC version requires) and we can therefore imagine a little higher performance. The RTX 2060 Founders Edition is offered at a price of 370 €, which makes it a good price / performance ratio for those who would like to taste the joys of new features, such as ray tracing and DLSS, Asus meanwhile does not. do not hear in the same way and it takes 480 € to get your copy. Let’s see if this (big) increase is justified in practice.

We’re not going to go over all the specs specific to the RTX 2060, as we’ve covered it already, but we’ll focus on the differences. One of the big differences here is the frequency of operation in Turbo mode. Indeed, when the RTX 2060 FE reaches 1680 MHz (more in practice as you can see here) the OC version from Asus displays 1830 MHz in Gaming mode (with fans that turn off when idle) and 1860 MHz in mode OC. On paper, this increase in frequency seems to be nice, it will be necessary to see in practice what it gives! Note as usual that the TDP is the limiting factor here, the RTX 2060 FE already saturates the allocated 160 Watts. Asus does not communicate on the TDP of its card either, so it is difficult to say if it will consume more at the socket to ensure these higher frequencies, we will see this during the tests! Moreover, the Asus card is equipped with a 6-pin power connector in addition to the classic 8-pin.
The other very different point from the FE version is of course the size of the beast, 30 cm long, 13.2 cm high and 5 cm thick, which is a monster compared to the RTX 2060 FE version. Indeed, 7 cm more in length for 2 in height and 1 in thickness. This will necessarily affect the temperatures and / or noise level in favor of Asus, which has always been the case anyway, a good point for fans of silence.
