We continue the tests of products from Mr Silverstone with today a high-end aluminum case, I named the FTZ01! FT like Fortress which represents the top of the range of the brand, we are presented with a case in mini-ITX format with the same layout as the ML07 (tested here) and RVZ01 therefore a very compact beast capable of accommodating a large configuration for those for whom space is crucial (see my report on a high-end mini-ITX game configuration here).

Top of the range obliges the materials to be more noble and the price also climbs to arrive at around 140 €, let’s see what the beast has to say!

Unlike the ML07 the FTZ01 has an aluminum exterior, unibody for the fact that it is a single plate that covers 3 faces (the front and the 2 sides) and the frame itself is made of metal ( but we will see it later with a better finish than the ML07). The number of bays is rather small but remaining very correct for this type of product with 1 slot for a “slim” format disk drive, 1 dedicated 3.5 “slot and 3 slots for 2.5” SSD / HDD, as much as the trend is clearly towards SSDs at Silverstone.

Ventilation is provided by 3 openings for 12 cm fans, the FTZ01 is delivered with 2 “slim” fans rotating at a maximum speed of 1500RPM for a theoretical sound level of 18dB, one at the processor level and one at the card level graphics, an additional location is also available for the breakdown of the latter.

The dimensions are very substantially identical to the ML07 and RVZ01, namely 37.6 cm wide by 35.1 cm deep and 10.7 cm high, which means that it will remain very discreet and blend into the environment much more easily than a tower Standard ATX, note that feet are available to put it either vertically or horizontally. Due to these limited dimensions, however, it will be necessary to pay for a cooler with a maximum height of 8.3 cm (like the Cryorig C1 for example, tested here), on the other hand the graphics card will have the field cleared with a maximum length 33 cm for 15 cm in height, which means that even the biggest monsters sold on the market will be able to fit. The power supply must be in SFX format (like the very good Silverstone SX600-G tested here) or,

Offered at a price of around 140 € we are clearly in the high end for this type of product, aluminum is necessarily no stranger, let’s see if the FTZ01 is worth its price!

The box is black reflects a more upscale model than its little brother the ML07, a profile photo of the product is present on one side with the model and the brand of course as well as a listing of the main strengths.

On one side is a listing of the strengths of the FTZ01, length of the graphics card, aluminum exterior, mini-ITX motherboard, positive air pressure ventilation, etc. We are of course also entitled to a table showing all the technical characteristics of the case, dimensions, weight, materials used, fans supplied.

Upon opening, we find the manual and a presentation sheet of the various Silverstone products as well as of course the beast in its plastic bag sandwiched between 2 polystyrene molds. The protections are sufficient for transport and are unlikely to be a problem.

Here is the beast! All dressed in black, we immediately notice that Silverstone clearly did not want to make a “bling bling” case here, the sobriety is there! We can see the aluminum plate that covers the facade and the 2 sides, the material is not brushed but is slightly grainy to the touch and is frankly pleasing to the eye. Unlike ML07, the color is not shiny but matt, which further accentuates this effect of sobriety. The finish is clearly above the ML07 that I had the opportunity to test, we expected no less when seeing the price!

On the front there are 2 USB 3.0 ports, 2 3.5mm jack sockets for a microphone and headphones, the power and reset buttons of course as well as the opening of the hypothetical reader / writer in “slim” format. We can also see the Silverstone logo on the right which is so inconspicuous it’s hard to see, at least it won’t spoil the scenery 😀

At the back we can see that Silverstone has done everything to ventilate the beast as much as possible, and that will not be too much when a gamer configuration is installed inside this small box, grilles in the shape of a honeycomb. bee wherever it was possible to put it as well as PCI brackets, also ventilated. The only difference with the ML07 and RVZ01 models here, apart from the more upscale finish of the metal is the location of the outlet for the power cord, in fact it has been shifted towards the bottom of the box in order to make room for Larger graphics cards, a small change that will clearly not displease those who would like to buy a graphics card with overweight (see the ML07 version here for a comparison).

On the sides there is not much to say, everything is very sober and Silverstone has added grilles at the top and bottom to further improve the air supply, in such a small space everything is good to to take.

The top door is equipped with a location for a fan (supplied), the bundle also offers magnetic dust filters which will be very practical, as you can see here.

Below the level of the graphics card there are 2 slots for 12cm fans, the graphics card is therefore particularly well off in terms of ventilation (1 fan supplied on the 2 slots available). The difference between the ML07 / RVZ01 and the FTZ01 lies in the size of the grid present for the heat removal from the power supply, a 12cm honeycomb grid is available here to accommodate SFX power supplies -L compared to 8cm of other boxes (see the difference here). As on the top of the supplied dust filters can be installed, as you can see in this picture.

As we can see everything is rather packed inside, on the right there is a plastic part which is there to accommodate the graphics card up to 33cm long, above this part are 2 2.5 ″ slots. The left part is of course reserved for the motherboard as well as the power supply, the power supply cage is surmounted by the one and only 3.5 ″ slot. Let’s take a closer look!

Once the right plastic part has been removed we can see the 2 slots for 12cm fans, they will blow directly on the graphics card which will greatly help the temperatures of said card.

The power compartment is removable and has a honeycomb grid that covers the entire surface to ensure a flow of fresh air (see the difference with the ML07 here), an extension is also present because the mains connector is located at the back of the box.

The plastic part housing the graphics card has a PCIe riser in order to install it perpendicular to the motherboard, making it possible to reduce the height of the case without cutting back on the size of the graphics card.

As we can see the bundle is rather complete, it will be possible to install the box in 2 different positions and according to the chosen orientation the small Silverstone logo can be placed as we see fit!

The configuration used during the tests is as follows:

Like the Silverstone ML07, the assembly in the FTZ01 took place in the same way and therefore very well as long as you take your time, as usual in this kind of case you have to assemble everything in a precise order. and be careful to pass the cables in every corner in order to have something more or less clean. Only the screws of the power supply cage on the front facade side caused me some concern because they are really not easy to access and without a magnetic screwdriver I wish good luck to anyone who tries to put them back in place!

A quick word about the installation of the graphics card, you have to put the little “extension” directly on the graphics card.

Then all you have to do is plug everything into the PCIe port of the riser and screw the card, nothing too complicated!

Here is the beast once mounted! As we can see everything is well packed inside, it is normal in this type of case but the space is sufficient to allow the motherboard and its components to breathe.

In order to test the box, I will carry out an OCCT Power Supply test for 30mins and then take the temperatures of the main components such as the processor (average of the 4 cores), the motherboard, the graphics card as well as the hard drive. The box will be tested once with the 5V fans and a Western Digital Raptor 150GB hard drive first of the name which is hell in terms of vibrations, which will allow to see how the carcass manages these and 2 other times without the hard drive with only a 5V and 12V SSD.

Regarding noise pollution, I will proceed as in the file on silent PCs, namely 1 raised in front, to the right, to the left, to the rear and above with the box in a vertical position.
The FTZ01 will be tested against its little brother the ML07 as it is sold, ie without any fan, given the current heat wave, the measurements have been taken again in order to have a realistic comparison.

At rest we can see that the FTZ01 behaves very well given the ambient heat worthy of a desert, with 32 ° for the processor, 35 ° for the graphics card as well as 54 ° for the motherboard and 40 ° for the 5V hard drive there is nothing to panic about, we can say thank you to the vents on the sides which just overlook the crucial components. In 12V we drop a few more degrees to arrive at 30 ° for the processor, 34 ° for the graphics card and 51 ° for the motherboard, the 2 fans included therefore do their job very well, anyway at rest it does not. There will not be the slightest problem and we can leave the fans in 5V without even asking questions.

Ambient sound level: 31dB

Due to its materials and its manufacturing quality the FTZ01 does better than its little brother the ML07 despite an identical internal design, we can see that the Raptor has an impact on noise pollution of course but, and to my surprise the vibrations are not very present, indeed the difference which one observes here is due only to the characteristic noise of hard disks turning at 10,000 revolutions / min (a rather sharp noise) which is in the end a very good point. In 5V we can clearly say that the FTZ01 is very discreet, almost completely silent, it needs better than its little brother thanks to its materials.

In 12V, on the other hand, the fans are clearly heard, even if the noise generated is quite “pleasant” to the ear, in fact there is no noise from the motor or any unpleasant friction.

The rotational speed of the fans does not change much with or without the fans, which is normal given the low heat generated by the components at rest. Whether in 5V or 12V, the fans do not move 966 RPM for the processor and 1200 RPM for the graphics card.

This is where it hurts in general, especially for mini ITX boxes, which is moreover in a heat wave! Suffice to say that it heats up in there but not to a level dangerous for the components, in 5V the processor reaches a maximum of 72 °, the graphics card 86 ° and the motherboard 66 °, even if it remains hot enough it does not. There is no reason to worry, especially once again with the ambient temperature which would harm any case.
In 12V, the temperature drops drastically for the processor, dropping to 64 °, the graphics card drops 2 ° to reach 84 ° and the motherboard 4 ° to reach 62 °, no worries about the components are in the nails .

Ambient sound level: 31dB

There are on the other hand no miracles, taking into account the heat, the little space and the internal components the noise pollution is high under load, particularly the 53 dB observed at the level of the graphics card which spits its lungs. Note that this scenario is clearly an extreme case, indeed in game it will never happen because the processor and the graphics card will never be at 100% simultaneously.

We see that noise pollution is a bit better in 12V than in 5V? How is this done? Well, given that the internal components make more noise than the fans even at 12V, the gain in air flow allows the graphics card fan to be lowered very slightly.

As I just said the graphics card is the main source of noise and spits its lungs well with 3700RPM in 5V and a slight drop to 3650RPM in 12V, the processor fan turns at its maximum speed namely 1550RPM than this either in 5V or in 12V.

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the Silverstone FTZ01?
After the very successful ML07 / RVZ01 Silverstone decided to put the cover back on using the same base but with high-end materials (aluminum in this case), the latter already being excellent choices for a mini-ITX “gamer” configuration ( see my dedicated file here) the FTZ01 is naturally just as excellent.

However, all is not the same as its little brothers, the FTZ01 add compatibility with SFX-L power supplies (like the SX500-LG still from Silverstone) which will allow better ventilation of the latter and the mains socket has been relocated in order to to extend the compatibility of graphics cards higher than normal.

The build quality is simply perfect, sobriety is essential and the bundle will allow immediate use (2 fans and dust filters). All this has a price, however, at around 140 € per copy the price rises quite sharply, aluminum does not help, if you are looking for a high-end case for a future mini-ITX configuration then the FTZ01 will be a perfect candidate , for those who do not want to put so much there is always the RVZ01 and ML07 🙂
