MOSCOW, August 30 – PRIME. To detect the theft of a Wi-Fi signal, you need to connect to the router as an administrator and see who is currently working with the device – this is the most reliable, but rather complicated way for an ordinary user, Alexey Raevsky, CEO of Zecurion, said on Sputnik radio. .
“This is a rather non-trivial task, and for a user who is not an information technology specialist, it will be difficult. Note that when a stranger connects to the Internet through a router, this is not displayed anywhere. Usually there are no such functions anywhere, so here you need to manually connect from time to time and see who is currently using the router,” the expert noted.
According to him, if someone else connects to the router, then this is fraught, firstly, with a drop in Internet speed. But this is not the only risk: the connection is issued to the owner of the router, and if another user does something illegal on the Web, then the claims will be against the owner.
“The danger is that if someone connects to your Wi-Fi and engages in some kind of illegal activity, then in the end they may come to you as a result of the investigation of this incident, and you will have to prove that it is not you. We can talk about the distribution of fakes on the Internet or some kind of prohibited content, calls for extremist activities, about some fraudulent actions that were performed from your IP address. In principle, you will prove that it was not you who did it, but such proceedings take a lot of time and nerves,” the expert said.
He explained that in order to prevent outsiders from connecting to the router, you need to find out the cause of the device’s vulnerability.
“There can be many options here. Perhaps this is the use of some old unreliable encryption algorithms in the router. It is also possible to use a weak password or no password at all. Also, some outdated firmware of the router may be the reason for unauthorized connection. Firmware needs to be updated periodically”, Rayevsky advised.
