The head of Naftogaz spoke about the transition of Ukraine to heating with garbage

MOSCOW, 1 Oct — PRIME. Already in the next heating season, it is planned to completely abandon gas for centralized heating in Ukraine and switch to heating with biomass and garbage, said Yuriy Vitrenko, Head of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine.

“By the next heating season, Ukraine plans to completely abandon the use of natural gas for heating thanks to alternative energy sources. The experience of Zhytomyr (a city in the Zhytomyr region – ed.) shows that in most cases it is possible to switch from natural gas for heating by the next heating season, for example , for biomass, garbage,” Ukrinform quoted him as saying.

Vitrenko said that thermal power plants are being built in Zhytomyr, which will operate on biomass and RDF (refuse derived fuel – solid secondary fuel, actually household waste – ed.) And wood chips. The total capacity of these facilities will be 50 megawatts. Vitrenko added that it is economically more profitable for Naftogaz to launch such projects now than to import gas even for this heating season.

“We are raising funds for this from international partners. Such projects help to ensure that all energy is sustainable in the future. We also need to be aware of how important it is to switch from natural gas to biomass, alternative sources, heat pumps as soon as possible, because with the market price of gas, the payback period for such projects is 2-3 months,” he explained.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal assured that the country will be provided with energy resources in the autumn-winter period. In turn, Vitrenko previously advised Ukrainians to stock up on blankets and warm clothes on the eve of winter, since, according to him, during the heating season, the temperature in the rooms will be 17-18 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below the norm, and the heating season itself will shorter than usual.
