The Intel I225-V Ethernet chip that the Z490 will carry has problems that will only be fixed by hardware

HD Tecnología

A new internal Intel document for motherboard manufacturers revealed that the "Foxville" Ethernet chip, known as the I225-V, is having issues with Inter-Packet GAP (IPG) Variation, and the only way to fix it is with a fix by hardware.

Basically Intel did what never needs to be done and didn't follow the IEEE 2.5Gb / s transmission standard, and as you know, not following standards brings problems. This led to the aforementioned problem of IPG variation, and resulted in packet losses and decreased bandwidth.

Unlike other problems that are usually solved with firmware, this problem only has a hardware solution. In other words: They have to redesign the chip, and all the chips already made have problems. This means that all the chips that are in the Z490 already manufactured have problems, and those that continue to be manufactured too, because Intel will release a new revision only later this year, so it will continue to distribute the version with failures for a time plus.

Not everything is so bad:

Intel clarified that there are two temporary solutions to this problem: One of them is to place the chip at 1Gb / s instead of 2.5Gb / s, and there it will work perfectly. Since more than 90% of users do not usually make transfers above 1Gb / s, you can easily set the chip at that speed and have a stable connection. The other is that if the PC with this chip is the only one connected by LAN to the router, you can set the minimum IPG to 15 bytes instead of 12, and it will work well there.

What do you think about this problem of Intel Ethernet chips? Does it affect your purchase decision?
