The Intel Meteor Lake would have a VPU unit for artificial intelligence, similar to that of the Apple M1

Although the 12th has not even been officially announced. Generation of Intel Core processors “Alder Lake”, are already circulating multiple rumors about the 14th. Generation “Meteor Lake”, and in this case the rumor speaks of its improvements for artificial intelligence, since Intel would be considering adding a VPU unit (Video Processing Unit) in this generation.

According to the rumor, this VPU would have a 16-core Neural Engine for Artificial Intelligence acceleration in general similar to those present in the Apple M1, which would allow to perform functions such as voice recognition, language translation, object identification, and more. , and it would specialize mainly in video, allowing for example to receive video in 1080p and rescale it to 4K in the output to reduce the bandwidth when requesting the content in 1080p instead of 4K.

What do we officially know about these processors:

For now Intel did not mention too many details about Meteor Lake as it will arrive only at the end of 2023. However, we already know that it will be manufactured under the Intel 4 process (Intel’s 7nm process), and that it will be the first desktop CPU in have multiple DIEs. As revealed by Intel, Meteor Lake will have a processing DIE, where the CPU cores and cache will be found, a DIE that will handle the I / O (SATA, PCIe ports, etc.), and a third DIE that will house the Integrated graphics, which will have up to 192 Execution Units.

Intel is expected to reveal more details about Meteor Lake on October 27 during their Intel Innovation event, where they will also announce their new 12th Alder Lake processors. Generation that will hit the market eight days later, on November 4, so stay tuned to HD Tecnología to be aware of all the news.

What do you think about the inclusion of a VPU for AI acceleration in Meteor Lake processors? Does it make sense to have GPUs with much better hardware for AI?
