The new 12-pin PCI-E 5.0 power connector is identical to the one used by Nvidia

A few days ago Asus confirmed the existence of the new power connector for GPUs with PCI-E 5.0 interface, and now the first images of the connector included with its new line of sources came to light, confirming that its design will be identical to that used by Nvidia on their RTX 30 Founders Edition.

As Eteknix showed in their photographs, this new connector uses the same Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 format used by Nvidia, being physically compatible with the RTX 3070 FE. Even so, it is not clear if they use the same cable distribution being electrically compatible, or if it has been changed since the Nvidia implementation was a proprietary implementation and this implementation will become a standard, so it could be dangerous to connect it without verify this information previously.

Regarding its connection to the source, Asus will use only two modular connectors despite the fact that this cable is certified to deliver up to 662W, and graphics cards can consume up to 600W of it. Certified connectors for more current and thicker cables than current PCI-E cables may be used to support this additional consumption, so an adapter from the current 8-pin cables to the new PCI-E cable cannot be used 12-pin.

PCI-SIG has not yet made the specifications of this new connector public, so we still do not know all its details, although it is estimated that we could see them tomorrow when the first products with PCI-E 5.0 begin to circulate after the arrival of Alder on the market. Lake. We will keep you updated on the news in this regard.

What do you think about this new power connector for PCI-E 5.0 GPUs? Is it okay for you to switch to the need for three or perhaps even four of the current connectors?
