The Nvidia Geforce GTX 1000 series returns from the dead

The year 2021 looks to be consistently marked by a crying shortage of raw materials and components. This does not only lead to higher prices, as even those who are willing to pay the price do not even have the opportunity to buy the product. Anyone looking for the latest graphics card should be prepared to queue for months, something Nvidia hopes to fix by breathing life into the dead.

It has previously been reported that the Geforce RTX 2060 and RTX 2060 Super will be re-released, but first out will be none other than the Geforce GTX 1050 Ti. The model was released in the fall of 2016 and was at the time a graphics card for the lower performance segment, with “good enough” performance to drive around games in 1080p resolution.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti is widely available in Swedish stores with prices from around SEK 1,600 and up. When SweClockers calls around to Swedish resellers, it is confirmed that Nvidia has started selling the model in significant volumes again. However, this is not a regular re-introduction, as nothing has been said at all by Nvidia.

Why just the Geforce GTX 1050 Ti and not something more modern like the two-year-old GTX 1650 (Super) will return, only Nvidia can answer. The most obvious reasons would be that the company has large stocks of the GP107 circuit and that the GTX 1000 series was the last to consistently use GDDR5 and GDDR5X graphics memory, with demand lower than the latest GDDR6 and GDDR6X. Here, too, it is possible that they are in large warehouses.

A less likely alternative that cannot be ruled out, however, is that Nvidia has resumed production of the GP107 graphics circuit. It is a small circuit of only 132 mm² that is easy to manufacture in large volumes and is manufactured on Samsung’s old 14-nanometer technology. While the order books are filled to the brim regardless of manufacturing technology, demand for the technology should be lower than for Samsung’s 7 and 5 nanometers.

In addition to the Geforce GTX 1050 Ti, there are also rumors in the industry that more graphics cards of older format are coming in from both Nvidia and AMD. Which models it is specifically about is still unclear. What is clear, however, is that the duo takes all possible means to meet market demand.
