“The sequel to Ampere will be released in 2022”

Among pots and pans, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang once again invites you to a presentation in the spirit of graphics hardware, now that the GPU Technology Conference 2021 (GTC) is being kicked off. As expected, Huang touches on the latest solutions for data centers, where precise simulations of manufacturing environments, digital collaboration and models for artificial intelligence (AI) are some of the major items on the company’s agenda.

Nvidia is also lifting the veil on its own ARM processor tailored for high bandwidth in a server context, a processor named Grace after Grace Hopper – a scientist who has previously been on the agenda as a candidate for the next graphics card architecture. Grace will make her debut in 2023, but already now Jensen Huang believes that it is time to draw up clear plans for what is to come, both in terms of processor and graphics.

With the introduction of its own processors, Nvidia gets a third product category in the portfolio, which is accompanied by hardware-accelerated data management (Data Processing Unit, DPU) and the graphics segment (GPU). From 2022 onwards, the technology giant promises that there will be annual news in one or more areas, where the most interesting from a consumer point of view is of course what comes after the graphics cards based on “Ampere”.

For those who were hoping for outright revelations, Nvidia shatters hopes by only listing “Ampere Next” and “Ampere Next Next”. In all probability, it is not a bottling of Intel’s “plus”, but a placeholder for new architectures that are not yet ready to be revealed. Revealed, on the other hand, means that the next round of graphics hardware is looking forward to the year 2022, while another two years will be until the next big news – a pattern that can also be seen between “Turing” and “Ampere”.

It should be mentioned, however, that the product plan refers to launch windows for the server world, but with last year’s “Ampere” unveiling, the consumer-adapted variant of the architecture found its way to the market only four months later. If the same procedure applies next year, the successor to the Geforce RTX 3000 can be expected to follow the presented plan fairly well. However, the future will show whether it will be the popular multi-circuit solution “Hopper” that hides behind the “Ampere Next” scenery.
