The central bank of the United States, the Federal Reserve, is seeking to hire a manager with responsibilities in integrating digital currencies. This is the first official step of the institution in the direction of cryptocurrencies and digital technology.
The employment announcement posted on the Federal Reserve website states that the new manager will work in the traditional payments sector. The retail payments section has the role of overseeing automatic verification and clearing services, facilitating research in the field of retail payments and addressing policy and regulatory issues.
In addition to the responsibilities related to the traditional payments with checks and cards, the responsibilities of the new employee will include:
“Facilitating and contributing to innovation research, including digital currencies, stable cryptocurrencies, DLT technologies and financial / digital innovation in retail payments.”
In addition to digital currency research, the manager will contribute to the development of payment policies and will represent the Central Bank of the United States in relation to other government agencies. The hiring salary is around $ 250,000 per year.
The position of the parliamentarians
Last month, two US parliamentarians sent a letter to the President of the Federal Reserve, asking them to consider issuing a digital currency. The main argument is that the global financial industry is evolving towards digitalisation, and the United States risks lagging behind.
Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, suggested in August that a digital currency backed by a central bank could replace the dollar as a global reference currency.
In turn, the central bank of China has announced that it is preparing to launch its own digital currency, which will stimulate the circulation of Chinese yuan internationally.
