1 Tor integration in the wallet application

The optional wallet (Tor) is available for both Android and iOS users.

Prior to this update, Android users were able to use Orbot as a proxy. However, this option was not available to iOS users while accessing other applications. Using a VPN outside of an application worked, but it proved to be unreliable, risking information leakage.

Essentially, Tor removes a user’s IP address, routing information through a relay of other encrypted servers before reaching the IP destination.

It offers users less problems and more privacy and security. In simple terms, activating Tor will mean that Blockstream servers will still have wallet information, but will not know the IP address of the wallet user or from which country they are connecting to. Also, other network participants will not know that they are accessing a Blockstream Green wallet.

Although this means more censorship resistance for wallet users, the use of Tor itself can be an alarm in some countries. Some analysts warn that IP hiding is seen as suspicious by authorities.

The developers of Green Wallet point out, however, that this feature does not prevent the analysis of the activities carried out on the blockchain.

Tor integration is an early access feature, so it is still in the testing phase. Users who use it have the opportunity to send any bugs on the Blockstream Green Telegram channel.

Tor Browser is an open-source software, which is essentially powered by grants and a global team of volunteers.
