Video games grossed over $ 23 million on Kickstarter last year, and tabletop games raised 10x more

Kickstarter experts summed up the results of 2020, indicating how much money was raised and in what categories within the framework of different campaigns. If we talk about video games, then their developers in the past year managed to raise $ 23.3 million, which is 35% higher than in the previous period.

The number of successful fundraising campaigns reached 408, the highest since 2014. But the number of all crowdfunding campaigns has decreased compared to 2019: it was 1403, and now it is 1331.

Game developers did not raise big money on Kickstarter in 2020, because only six studios managed to raise more than 500 thousand dollars. The overwhelming majority were content with amounts not exceeding the $ 50,000 mark.

The board games are completely different. During the reporting period, their authors were able to raise $ 237 million on Kickstarter. The total number of projects is 3163, but only 1319 were successfully funded. In total, in 2020, 730 million were collected on the crowdfunding service, which is a record for the site. In 2019, they managed to collect 115 million less. Thus, 237 million from “tabletop” – this is a third of all funds raised on Kickstarter, which is impressive.

The total number of fundraising campaigns decreased slightly – from 41,789 to 37,581. Again, the number of successfully completed campaigns was expected to be much lower, only 18,642.
