Walmart will track Indian shrimp shipments via IBM blockchain

Walmart, the largest US retail chain, has announced a partnership with IBM to track shrimp shipments from the Indian region of Andra Pradesh on the blockchain.

IBM will provide the blockchain platform, which will allow tracking the entire shrimp supply chain from producer to consumer.

“Integrating blockchain into the shrimp supply chain will help improve the quality of product information in order to comply with the requirements and to provide it to consumers. It ensures product traceability, starting from the farm and throughout the transportation process, ”noted Walmart.

It is noted that thanks to the pilot blockchain program, small farmers will be able to access the food safety program, which was previously available only to members of the Sam’s Club. This program requires seafood producers to comply with agricultural best practices. At the same time, Walmart will finance small farmers from India to learn these practices.

“This blockchain project was the first of its kind in India and could turn into a long-term program for the shrimp industry in the Andra Pradesh region. It directly helps farmers in training and development, ”said Chowdary Kunam, Managing Director of Indian seafood producer Sandhya Aqua.

Previously reported
that the Ecuadorian shrimp maker SSP will use the IBM blockchain to ensure product quality control.
