Windows 10X, Panos Panay confirms: it will arrive on single screen displays first

At the beginning of last April the rumor emerged that Microsoft Surface Neo may have been postponed to at least 2021; and the same would apply to similar products made by third party partners. The whole dual screen Windows 10X project was apparently paused.

However, today Panos Panay dropped the "bomb" saying that Windows 10X will arrive the same in the coming months, but initially it will start on devices with one display only. It is a very important change of course for Windows 10X, which until now had always been associated only with dual-screen devices. "The world is very different from last October when we illustrated our vision for dual-screen devices," said the recent new head of the Windows + Surface division. And goes on:

With Windows 10X we thought first of all about flexibility, and this flexibility allows us to direct our energies on Windows 10X devices with a single screen that rely on the power of the cloud to allow our customers to work, learn and play in new ways . These single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that will hit the market, and we will continue to wait for the right moment, together with our third party partners, to also present dual-screen devices.

In short, it seems that here too the coronavirus effect was felt, and that Microsoft, amid slowdowns due to prolonged closures, potential hitches in the supply chain and doubts about demand in the coming months, has preferred to postpone the newly developed form factor to better times.

Also in the same post, Panay also spends a few words for traditional Windows 10: he says that the 20H1 update will arrive later this month (without more precise dates) and indicates that the next update, 20H2, will be more substantial than that of the previous year (19H2).
