A faster and greener way of dyeing denim has been developed

Scientists from the University of Georgia decided to try to change the way the iconic denim is produced. So they came up with a faster and more ecological way of dyeing denim, which was published in the journal Green Chemistrybut the implementation of which is now questionable.

The current ways of dyeing denim in the future will have to be changed to more ecological. Scientists already have decent competition

Currently, dyeing denim is usually reduced to dipping the fabric in an aqueous solution of natural or synthetic indigo pigment, which is dissolved only with the use of toxic agents (e.g. sodium dithionite). When such a solution is used, most of the chemicals are removed from it, and then some still contaminated water is poured into local rivers.

Therefore, scientists decided to change the whole process by developing an alternative method whereby indigo particles of any origin are mixed with cellulose nanofibers obtained from wood pulp, chitosan, a natural sugar, and water.

The hydrogel obtained in this way is applied to the untreated material. The nanocellulose fibers then form a mesh-like shell that surrounds the indigo particles, sticking them to the fibers. Chitosan then increases the grip and durability of the joints, ensuring that the indigo stays attached to the denim after the fabric dries and washes.

The technique not only requires no toxic chemicals and is more effective than existing dyeing processes. It uses significantly less water and drying time, and is approximately the same thickness, weight and flexibility as conventionally dyed denim.
