A modern workplace can track an employee's every move

The access control system has changed over the years. Nowadays, electronic cards are often used instead of classic keys. However, ideas to improve the workplace regularly appear on the horizon. This time it is a set of sensors that track the movements of employees.

Coin-sized sensors can be mounted in lighting or computers. They detect movement, light intensity and energy consumption. This is what is proposed by Enlighted, one of the leading companies on the topic. Humanyze, on the other hand, is working on a 5-year project to carry out biometric analysis through seemingly typical ‘badges’. Only seemingly, because the tags are equipped with a radio frequency identification system, a standard that allows for wireless data exchange, Bluetooth, a detector that performs “face-to-face” interactions, an accelerometer and two microphones. All this in a small rectangle that you can see below.

Of course, the fundamental question arises: what is all this for? In this case, surveillance and control by employers seems to take an Orwellian form. Several conclusions can be drawn from studies conducted on 1,000 people. Among the employees who did not use such identifiers, only 16% had a positive opinion about them, while 38% had a completely different opinion. Interestingly, in companies that use GPS tracking, as many as 54% of employees have a positive opinion of them.

Due to the advancement of technology, increasing control over employees seems to be a natural process. However, you should do it in moderation so as not to wake up in a reality where humans will be reduced to the role of robots.
