“A while left before DirectX Raytracing really takes off”

Nvidia recently launched its graphics architecture Turing, which became the first to support the technology ray tracing through Microsoft’s DirectX Raytracing interface. So far, however, only three models from Nvidia are supported ray tracing, and then only in theory when there are no game titles.

In an interview with 4Gamer (Japanese), AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group CEO David Wang says that they are interested in implementing support for DirectX Raytracing and that they will “respond” to the technology. When this can happen, however, is not mentioned.

Wang also mentions that he personally believes that the technology will not make a breakthrough on the broad front until it is available in both cheaper and more expensive graphics cards, which is not the case today. It is likely that AMD will wait with the technology for the upcoming Navi, which is planned to be released sometime in 2019.

According to previous reports, AMD with Navi will focus on the middle segment instead of the top tier, similar to how they did with the architecture Polaris. When support for ray tracing implemented in games on a large scale is still unknown, but it is likely that DICE online launcher Battlefield V will be the first out with this.

UPDATED 2018-11-13: The news has been updated with a correct translation of the quote from AMD’s David Wang. It previously claimed that AMD has no plans to support DirectX Raytracing, which is incorrect. Source: Overclock3D
