According to Steam's survey, Nvidia sold 18 RTX 3000s for every RX 6000 that AMD sold

Latest Hardware Survey from Steam shows a big jump on the part of NVIDIA, this thanks to the recent departure of laptops and GPUs. If you want to see the complete list click here.

The latest GPUs are still in short supply, and even GPUs from a generation or two ago are still unreasonably priced. Well, according to Steam data, NVIDIA is doing better by getting its GPUs into the hands of consumers. And it’s not just Steam, because a recent JPR market analysis confirms this as well.

If we only take into account those GPUs that support DirectX 12 from the Steam API (this helps to filter some onboard and some very old GPUs) we get the following results:

The last 3 generations of NVIDIA and AMD GPUs make up 75% of the total DirectX 12 GPUs according to Steam. However, most of these are GTX 10 series and RX 500 series, followed by GTX 16 and RTX 20 series. The RTX 30 series now represents more than the last 3 generations of AMD according to Steam.

Seeing this RTX 30 series swept AMD’s RX 6000 series. So much so that according to the data NVIDIA sold 18 RTX 3000s for every 1 RX 6000. The JPR report shows us that AMD’s dedicated GPUs account for 80% of the market and that AMD has only 20% of the market, for both desktop and laptop PCs. This means that the Steam data is wrong or that many next-generation AMD GPUs end up in the hands of miners and do not count for the Steam survey.

There are many reasons to question Valve’s data. In the past it has had its problems where, for example, internet PCs were taken into account cafes. But without a doubt the biggest reason to doubt is the fact that Valve never provided information on how this data was taken.

The RTX 3070 Ti is a great example of this. Last month it didn’t even appear on the list, but this month it’s already at 0.23%. That’s the best “first month” in the Steam poll since last year. So was the RTX 3070 Ti that popular or does Steam send more polls to PCs with new hardware?

The good conclusion we can draw from this is that we are seeing more and more current GPUs and more gamers are being able to buy one.
