Akon City will be built on the land donated by the President of Senegal

Akon City

Authorities in Senegal have approved the construction project for Akon City – a 2,000-acre metropolis in which the digital currency called Akoin will be used exclusively.

Akon, the Senegalese rapper first announced plans for the most futuristic metropolis in Africa 18 months ago. At the time, he said the city would be built on 2,000 acres of land donated by Senegal’s President Macky Sall.

Local media said that Akon City will be built in the coastal village of Mbodiene, five minutes from the new international airport in Senegal. Last week, Akon also signed a “memorandum of understanding” with the state-owned tourism company SAPCO in Senegal, according to LadBible.

Akoin, the cryptocurrency developed under the singer’s sponsorship, is scheduled to be launched in early July. However, the construction project of Akon City will take much longer.

“It is a 10 year construction project, so we do it in stages. We started construction in March 2019, and the second stage will be 2025 “,

said Akon in an interview with Los Angeles rap radio station Power106.

Cryptocurrencies, “saving Africa”

Akon is the stage name of 45-year-old Aliaume Thiam, who has diversified her work in recent years. He has dedicated himself to entrepreneurship and charity activities, especially in his native country Senegal.

One of its first initiatives was Akon Lighting Africa, which supplies solar energy to African countries. The new city will be “all renewable, the solar city Akon-tainment,” Akon told Power106.

The artist argued that blockchain technology can enable Africans to become less dependent on their governments.

“I think blockchain and crypto could be saving Africa in many ways because it brings power back to the people,”

he said when he announced his plans for Akon City.

“Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology provide a more secure currency that allows people in Africa to advance independently of the government.”

Akon is not the only entrepreneur who believes that African nations are ready for cryptocurrency adoption. Twitter CEO and Bitcoin lawyer Jack Dorsey recently returned from a trip to Africa with business plans on the continent. And, according to the United Nations, Africa could be the next crypto border.
