AMD announces its EPYC Milan-X CPUs, with 3D V-Cache and up to 768MB of L3 cache

Yesterday afternoon AMD made a large number of announcements regarding its upcoming server releases, and among those announcements it introduced its new EPYC Milan-X server CPUs, the first server CPUs equipped with 3D V-Cache.

This 3D V-Cache technology stacks an additional L3 cache block on top of the Zen 3 DIEs, and throughout the 8 DIEs used in these Milan-X EPYC, it allows reaching up to 512MB of extra cache over the 256MB of cache provided by the DIEs. Zen 3 standard, reaching a total of 768MB of L3 cache per chip. Together with the L2 and L1 caches, a total of 804MB of cache is reached, which will significantly increase performance in tasks that use the processor intensively.

The top-of-the-line model will be the EPYC 7773X, which will feature 64 cores, 128 threads, a 2.2GHz base frequency, 3.5GHz boost frequency, and a total of 768MB of L3 cache, all with a TDP of 280W. It will also have up to 128 PCI-E 4.0 lines and support for DDR4-3200 in Octa-Channel, like its predecessor, the EPYC 7773. Its cost will increase US $ 1,000 compared to its predecessor based on the standard version of Milan, reaching a price of almost US $ 10,500, showing that it is not economical to incorporate this technology, although the 512MB of cache xtra will undoubtedly be worth it in servers that need this class of processors.

Unfortunately AMD did not give details on the processors with 3D V-Cache for desktop, which are the ones that we are going to use the mere mortals, although they are expected to be announced in December or at the latest in January during CES 2022. These will bring improvements in average performance 15% and will be compatible with current AM4 motherboards, being the last update for this platform before the debut of Zen 4 on the AM5 platform.
