AMD APU 3000 and 4000 Graphics Cores Tests and Comparison with Budget Graphics Cards | Processors | Reviews

The release of AMD 4000 APU series processors did not go as usual: the processors are presented, but they will not be available at retail. They can be purchased exclusively as part of the entire OEM system. AMD itself argues that the OEM market is 50 times larger than the market for independent assemblers, i.e. you and me.

However, the market decided otherwise, and it is not difficult to buy such processors even in Russia.

It’s a very difficult time on the video card market. The production shortage, plus the mining boom, has inflated the prices of video cards so much that even entry-level representatives now cost almost 10 thousand rubles, coming close to the cost of the older processor from the previous AMD Ryzen 5 3400G series.

So, maybe you should be patient or take a processor with already integrated graphics instead of these “Gags” at heavenly prices?

Ryzen 4000 is a continuation of AMD’s hybrid processors, which began back in 2011 with Llano processors.

Hybrid processors have never claimed the high-end systems segment. Initially, their main task was simply to display images on the screen. They were mainly intended for offices and not at all demanding PC users. But with the release of the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G, the perception of integrated graphics performance has changed dramatically.

The desktop line of AMD 4000G series processors includes 6 models, of which 3 have the same characteristics, but with a reduced TDP.

Here, many owners of previous APUs of 2000-3000 series processors may notice that the number of integrated graphics execution units has decreased, which will inevitably affect graphics performance in a bad way.

In turn, AMD assures that the graphics performance of the older 4700G model has become 20% more than the previous generation flagship in the form of the Ryzen 5 3400G, and the 4600G model is ahead of it by 6%.

Today we will try to find out whether this is really so, and at the same time we will check to what level the performance of integrated graphics has reached in comparison with entry-level video cards in the person of AMD RX 550 4G and Nvidia GTX 1050Ti.

Testing technique

All processor models will initially be tested in stock with fixed timings and 3200 MHz RAM frequency.

In the future, each of the processors will be overclocked to the maximum stable frequency in terms of graphics / RAM and the frequency of processor cores.

The AMD RX 550 graphics card has also been tested in stock condition and overclocked. The Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics card was tested in stock condition.

An external video capture card was used for video recording.

Test configuration

  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I Gaming BIOS version 1801;
  • RAM: KFA2 Hall Of Fame DDR4-3600 (HOF4CXLBS3600K17LD162C) 2 * 8 GB;
  • Drive # 1: M.2 Samsung 970 Pro 512GB;
  • Storage №2: SATA-III SanDisk Ultra II 960 GB SDSSDHII-960G-G25;
  • Power supply unit: Cooler Master V1200 Platinum 1200 W

Test results

Let’s start testing by looking at the performance of the memory subsystem.

AMD Ryzen 3 3200GAMD Ryzen 5 3400GAMD Ryzen 5 4650G

Taking into account the fixed timings, the new product has an approximately 10% increase in performance in copying, reading and writing to memory, while the latencies have increased significantly.

The updated memory controller has a positive effect on the bandwidth, but the 3200 MHz frequency is a bottleneck for it. It is designed to work at 4000+ MHz by default, although AMD says otherwise in its specification.

Graphics test in AIDA64 GPGPU Benchmark prefers the 3400G processor, the new 4650G just slightly outperforms the 3200G.

The outsider is the RX 550 video card, this is not surprising, the default core frequency is only 1071 MHz, but it also has a trump card up its sleeve – GDDR5 memory, which shows just phenomenal copying performance in memory compared to competitors.

At default operation, the new product showed the best result in almost all games tested, even despite the more modest GPU specs. The outsider in testing is 3200G, but it will also allow the user to enjoy most of the tested games with acceptable graphics quality and FPS without any serious investments in RAM, any memory, even OEM, is capable of operating at 3200 MHz.

Overclocking testing

Component overclocking is individual in each case and is as stable as possible for a particular instance.

AMD Ryzen 3200G and 3400G, although formally refer to the 3000 series, are built on the outdated architecture of the 2000 series, overclocking the memory for this series above the frequency of 3600-3666 is more rare than a natural result.

Frequency characteristics

  • AMD Ryzen 3 3200G Core 4100 MHz Ram 3533 MHz CL14 GPU 1700 MHz;
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Core 4200 MHz Ram 3600 MHz CL14 GPU 1800 MHz;
  • AMD Ryzen 5 4650G Core 4300 MHz Ram 4333 MHz CL16 GPU 2400 MHz;
  • AMD RX 550 Core 1400 MHz Ram 1900 MHz;
  • Default Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics card.

Overclocking the memory significantly increased the memory bandwidth of all test participants, but the biggest gain is undoubtedly behind the newcomer 4650G.

Even on Ryzen 5000 processors, this performance cannot be achieved. Along with the increase in bandwidth, the memory latency of all participants has been significantly reduced.

Overclocking the graphics core also benefited all participants, but the 3400G is still the leader. Its superiority over the novelty is approximately 15-20%.

In games, overclocking significantly increased the performance of all participants, the favorite among processors is the 4650G, which outperforms the 3400G by about 10%, and the RX 550 discrete graphics card by 15%. The performance of the GTX 1050Ti graphics card was beyond the reach of all test participants, perhaps if AMD integrated Vega11 graphics under the cover of the Renoir 4650G processor, the result would be more impressive.

findings

Of course, AMD hybrid processors have great prospects ahead, already now their performance is on par with entry-level video cards in the form of RX 550-460-560 GTX 1030 and with a stretch of GTX 1050.

Even the younger model Ryzen 3 3200G, which costs 10 thousand rubles, is in no way inferior to the full-fledged RX 550 video card, which is now being sold for the corresponding price.

As for the new item, the performance of the integrated graphics has really increased, despite the reduction in the number of execution units, but not as much as we would like. If you are already a happy owner of a Ryzen 5 3400G processor, then there is no point in switching to the 4000 series, solely because of the more powerful integrated graphics.

Already, hybrid processors allow you to fully enjoy a pleasant picture in FullHD resolution with medium graphics settings in most of the games tested.

In gaming innovations in the face of Cyberpunk 2077 and other modern projects, these APU processors are capable of providing 45-50 FPS only in resolution 720p with medium graphics settings.

If now you are faced with the choice of components for assembling a computer, but there is not enough finance for a good video card and you are looking at buying a so-called Gags, pay attention to the Ryzen 4650G series processors, buying it will be more rational and will help you survive such a difficult time without any discomfort with the availability of video cards in stores and their prices, besides, the price of this processor is about 14 thousand rubles. And when the situation returns to normal, you can simply buy a video card.

About the disadvantages.

All hybrid processors, as you already understood, have an Achilles’ heel, this is the direct dependence of the performance of the integrated graphics on the performance of the memory subsystem. If you nevertheless decide to assemble such a system, you need to choose the right memory and better with a volume of 16-32 gigabytes, because with 4000 series models you can allocate 4 gigabytes for integrated graphics, and of course you must use memory in dual-channel mode.
