AMD bildar Radeon Technologies Group

Despite several technological breakthroughs, AMD is losing market share on the graphics front. Among stand-alone graphics cards, Nvidia now accounts for over 80 percent of the market, while Intel exercises almost total dominance when it comes to integrated products. Everyone seems to agree that AMD is in urgent need of a substantial pool of power and now a major reorganization is announced.

Graphic architect Raja Koduri leads the newly formed Radeon Technologies Group.

With the creation of the Radeon Technologies Group we are putting in place a more agile, vertically-integrated graphics organization focused on solidifying our position as the graphics industry leader, recapturing profitable share across traditional graphics markets, and staking leadership positions in new markets such as virtual and augmented reality.

In the newly formed department Radeon Technologies Group AMD now brings together everything that has to do with graphics. It includes the development of graphics processors (GPUs), integrated solutions (APUs) and so-called “semi-custom” products, ie partially tailored circuits for mainly game consoles.

The investment is led by none other than the graphics architect Raja Koduri, who in addition to AMD also worked on ATI, Apple and S3 Graphics. He is known for the development of multigraphy (Crossfire), the compression technology S3TC, Apple Retina Display and most recently virtual reality with AMD Liquid VR.

According to the press release, the newly formed graphics department will focus on regaining market share and establishing leading positions in new areas such as virtual and augmented reality.
