AMD Introduces Radeon R9 285 “Tonga Pro”

The fact that AMD has new graphics cards up its sleeve may not come as a surprise. A few months ago, it was revealed that the graphics processor Tonga is approaching and in practice replaces the aging Tahiti in the Radeon R9 280 series. The first model will be presented at the live 30th anniversary celebration of AMD30Live.

The new Radeon R9 285 is at least on paper very similar to its predecessor Radeon R9 280. The graphics processor Tonga Pro is manufactured with 28 nanometer technology and contains 1,792 stream processors in 918 MHz. This includes 2 or 4 GB of GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit memory bus. Together with the clock frequency 5.5 GHz, this gives a total bandwidth of 176 GB / s – significantly lower than its predecessor 240 GB / s.

The reference design is almost identical to previous graphics cards in the 280 series, but in the usual order, the partner manufacturers have free rein to both scare up the clock frequencies and use tailor-made coolers and circuit boards. The standard version takes up an extra card slot and is powered via two 6-pin PCI Express connectors to a TDP value of 190 W.

More features are full support for the AMD Mantle graphics interfaces and the upcoming DirectX 12 as well as audio acceleration with Trueaudio. Thanks to the new graphics processor, there will also be dynamic refresh rates with the G-Sync challenger AMD Freesync, which is expected to appear in new screens in 2015.

AMD states a target price of 249 dollars, which should be able to be translated into approximately 2,500 kronor including VAT in Swedish stores. Sales start on September 2 and at the same time AMD is also launching the Never Settle: Space Edition campaign for the entire R9 series, where Star Citizen and Alien: Isolation, among others, will be included in the purchase.
