AMD is squeezing market shares from Nvidia

The last two years have been difficult for AMD in the graphics card market, where the company has gone from having just over a third of the market to reaching a record low of 18 percent in 2015. The big winner has been rival Nvidia, which during the second quarter of 2015 noted a new top level with the remaining 82 percent.

After a slight increase in the third quarter of 2015, Jon Peddie Research now reports a larger increase in the fourth quarter. Today, AMD holds 21.1 percent of the market – up from the previous 18.8 percent. Despite a large increase in percentage, Nvidia continues to dominate with a share of as much as 78.8 percent.

The other side of the coin is a general decline, where the total number of graphics cards delivered fell by 4.9 percent compared to the third quarter. The reason for the lower deliveries is probably due to the fact that computer manufacturers built up their stocks earlier in the autumn before the lucrative Christmas trade.

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2014, deliveries decreased by 7.9 percent, which is, however, lower than the decline of 10.37 percent for desktops. Despite this, the report does not calculate the PC market, but again highlights gaming-oriented computers as a bright spot with a strong momentum.
