AMD is working on the graphics processor Tonga

The Hawaii graphics processor is the basis for AMD’s enthusiast-class graphics cards, but other models in the Radeon 200 series consist of renamed circuits. At the same time, the transition to 20 nanometers is delayed, which instead means that AMD and Nvidia can rely on architectural improvements.

Videocardz now reports that a new graphics processor from AMD is underway. This is Tonga, which according to the information is not manufactured at 20 nanometers and is still expected to be based around Graphics Core Next (GCN). It is likely instead that AMD worked on the energy efficiency of the architecture, not entirely different from what Nvidia did with the Maxwell architecture in the Geforce GTX 750 Ti and GTX 750.

According to the report, graphics cards based on Tonga are equipped with only 2 GB of memory for the reference model, which indicates that the circuit will be aimed at the middle class and possibly replace Pitcairn / Curacao in Radeon R9 270 and R9 270X. In other respects, support for technologies such as Mantle, Trueaudio and XDMA Crossfire is to be expected.

Tonga with associated graphics cards is expected to arrive during the third quarter of the year, ie during the period July – September.
